This morning, I inspected a home with a serious uneven subfloor problem that caused the entire floor to shift and wobble with every step. The young couple who had just purchased the home quickly realized something wasn’t right—and that’s when they contacted Evergreen Flooring and Remodeling LLC. Upon arrival, I began a full investigation to determine the cause behind the unstable flooring. What I found was a classic case of poor subfloor preparation: severe dips, humps, and no leveling work done at all.
Uneven Subfloor: The Hidden Problem Beneath Your Feet

Using a 10-foot measuring straightedge, I found areas with height variations of nearly half an inch. According to industry standards—including recommendations by most flooring manufacturers—the maximum acceptable variation is:
- 3/16 inch over a 10-foot span, or
- 1/8 inch over a 6-foot span.
This home clearly exceeded those limits. The subfloor had multiple high spots and deep depressions, and no preparation had been done prior to installing the flooring.
As a result, the floating floor system above was flexing, creaking, and shifting underfoot. Unfortunately, due to the structural stress caused by the uneven base, some locking mechanisms were already weakened or cracked—meaning the flooring could not be salvaged for reuse.
Why Subfloor Preparation Matters

Installing new flooring is not just about choosing the right style and color. It starts from the foundation below. Proper flooring installation includes:
- Leveling and flattening the subfloor
- Checking moisture levels and humidity
- Acclimating the material before installation
- Maintaining expansion gaps around all perimeters
- Priming surfaces before using self-leveling compounds
Skipping these critical steps can lead to major expenses down the line.
In this case, the only solution is to:
- Remove the existing flooring
- Carefully remove and label baseboards for reuse (if in good shape)
- Grind down high spots
- Fill low spots with a quality self-leveling compound
- Prime the subfloor as needed
- Install brand new flooring
- Reinstall baseboards or install new ones
The Cost of Cutting Corners

Fixing someone else’s shortcut comes at a price. Between labor, new flooring materials, leveling products, and finishing details, the total project cost can become significant—especially when the existing flooring is not reusable.
That’s why we always emphasize doing it right the first time.
